MySpace - A Good Business Opportunity?

This is a tricky one, we don’t really condone this as a business opportunity and nor do MySpace (in fact they explicitly discourage it).

But, a lot of businesses have found a way to quite literally grab customers by…

Bulk messaging MySpace users about there products and services.

If you’ve never heard of MySpace click here and have a look around. In a nutshell it’s a social networking site in which people create their own web presence. It’s free, easy to use and fairly addictive. It also attracts a lot of bands eager to tout their music.

In a sense the way that businesses seek to make money from MySpace isn’t all that disimilar from what the bands on MySpace are doing - except of course in principle, because they are out there explicitly to make money!

The technique is this: There are cheeky little tools out there that you can buy which will allow you to send messages and friend requests to hundreds, even thousands of myspace users all at once with the touch of button.

Since you’re mailing so many users at once, even a low response rate could mean several sales conversations for almost zero outlay. Definitely a money making business opportnuity, but perhaps not one without it’s cons:

1) It is a little intrusive. The site isn’t about making money or businesses. People go on there to check out music and stay in touch with friends.

2) MySpace will kick you off the site if they get wind of what you’re up to.

3) Sure you may make money doing this, but is it worth the brand name damage you risk inflicting on yourself? The public might view your business as intrusive, or unscrupulous if you approach your advertising in this manner.

In summary it’s a tricky one. We like the gun ho, bang up to date ingenuity of this business opportunity, but it just feels a little too similar to spam mailing. So yes this business opportunity will probably make money but alas we’re loathe to endorse it.
