Beware ‘Russian Brides’ - The Criminals’ Business Opportunity Scam!
Not all of them obviously. To say they’re all dodgy women who are only out to trick you out of your money would be a gross (and racist) generalisation. But there are more and more unscrupulous individuals supposedly from Russia who are posing as beautiful models looking for love. The sad truth is, they’re actually pursuing their own little highly illegal business opportunity - this is a meticulously organised crime run by teams of scammers…
A lot of them operate on dating and networking sites. They put together fake profiles and either nick pictures from genuine site members or elsewhere on the internet. Then they send out mass mailers (spam) to all and sundry. The first contact you’ll have from them will be a message which asks fairly innocent questions like what your favourite food is, what you like doing in your free-time (a bit like those letters you used to write to French pen-pals). Now say you’re feeling a bit bored and you fancy the woman then you might reply, which means you’ve taken the scammer’s bait. Then you’ll get a more personal email back. If you respond to that and communication starts flowing, you’ll find that before you know it she’s declaring total love for you and wants to come and live with you. So far it all sounds fair enough. But then little problems start cropping up, and this is when their nasty little ’scam’ business opportunity kicks in…
She needs money for her visa, her air ticket or a passport… alright, so you cover the cost there. She confirms her flight details, you’re excited and then she doesn’t show… she missed her flight, the ticket’s non-refundable and she needs more cash to buy a new one… or a close relative’s got ill and she needs money for medicine, treatment… whatever… she still fully intends to come and live with you just as soon as all these problems have been sorted out. You might think to yourself who would fall for a scam like this? Well unfortunately a lot of people out there have done. So far the Office of Fair Trading reckons these scammers have made millions. These guys make money on this scam day in and day out preying on innocent, albeit naive, folk. Now if you find yourself in a similar situation there are a couple of things you can do to check whether your beloved is the real deal or just another scammers business opportunity! First off google her name. If she’s a known scammer she’ll be on a blacklist somewhere. Second ask her loads of questions about her life and her background. The more detailed her answers the more likely is she’s genuine. That said if she starts asking for money, run a mile! Oh, and report her to the Office of Fair Trading.
