My mum’s preeeetty brilliant. I mean let’s face it, she’s even embraced Danny like one of her own and he’s a RIDICULOUS person.

But one thing that really gets my goat. She likes throwing money piles of money of the most absurdly easy-to-fix computer problems (and she’s not wealthy by any means)!

I mean she recently had a studenty type help her install Microsoft Office and set up a wireless network. Guess what he charges?

£150 per hour.

£150 for shoving CD’s in a computer and pressing ‘install’??!!

Well if these untrained tykes can do it, then anyone can. This is a gem of a business opportunity for the vaguely tech savvy.

Here’s what you do:
Go and put ads in your local newsagent, supermarket or library – you know, one of those handwritten paper ones that are stuck on shop windows (“Room for Rent… Dog Missing…) you know the sort of thing.

Then write something like this:

“Computer Problems? Can’t Get Your PC to Behave Itself?”

Don’t’ Panic. Give me a call on [insert number here]

I’m reliable, trustworthy and prompt and offer very reasonable rates. References available on request”

Many folk in there twilight years turn to these ads for all kinds of things. You name it: cleaners, home help, handymen, removal services, they’re all there.

Putting these ads up can cost as little as a few pounds a month and yet they’re ten times more effective then placing a full blown ad in a national newspaper.

Why?

Because it targets a local, niche audience. You won’t have to travel far AND the demands on you won’t be too tough. The kinds of people who’ll respond to your off the wall advert aren’t likely to be demanding hi-end technology solutions. I mean you won’t need a degree at MIT to fix their keyboard or reinstall Windows.

And the best bit?

Well, this is a win win business opportunity! The client will be pleased to have a friendly local that they can rely on to fix their computer… and you can reap the benefits of a high hourly rate simply for knowing your way around a PC!

Now of course if the problem is beyond you, whatever you do don’t charge them for your visit. Not only would that be unethical, it’ll also hit your business hard. You’ll quickly get a bad name for yourself – local gossip spreads like wildfire.
