Reclaiming Bank Charges - Update
You might remember we wrote about how you can reclaim your bank charges a while back. Basically those naughty banks have been getting away with imposing unfair charges (£30 here, £45 there) for years when they’re not technically allowed to.
It turns out you can write to your bank and demand all the charges they’ve made in the last six years to be reimbursed. Thousands of people in the UK have been doing just that with some spectacular results. One guy has even reclaimed over £27,000!
Danny’s girlfriend decided to give it a shot.
She wrote to her bank months ago and so far… nothing.
When she called to chase up her letter she was told she had to write to the Manager of her local branch to begin with and then he would forward it to the relevant department at Head Office (the place she wrote to in the first place).
It’s been about three weeks since she did just that and still nothing. So it looks like she’ll be heading down to the Court house and filing a small claims form. Should speed things up a bit!
It’s no surprise that the banks are slow to deal with these sort of things. First of all they don’t want to give back what will probably amount to billions. But more importantly, within the next month or so there’s going to be a ruling about what’s considered fair when it comes to bank charges.
Some experts estimate the ruling could mean banks can still charge £10 or £15 if you go overdrawn, a standing order fails and so on. That could effectively halve what you’re currently entitled to claim back from the high-street highwaymen.
So if you’ve been thinking about reclaiming your bank charges, but haven’t yet then you need to get a move on.
We’ll keep you updated with how Danny’s girlfriend gets on. Seems perseverance is definitely the key here.
